I'm an Americanist who specializes in 19th-century literature and rambles over more extensive interdisciplinary territory, including ecocriticism, environmental literature, American studies, ethnic American literatures, and gender studies.

My most recent research project combines my interests in women writers and environmental studies in an investigation of literature and material culture focusing on flowers. I serve as Chair of Environmental Studies at Davidson.

I'm committed to experiential learning pedagogies and I've incorporated community-based projects and wilderness leadership training into my courses. I'm co-editor of Coming Into Contact: Explorations in Ecocritical Theory and Practice (University of Georgia, 2007) and I've published articles on 19th-century American women writers, 20th-century American environmental literature, service learning and ecocomposition, and contemporary environmental justice literature.
