Mathematics Major & Minor

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department intends for majors to acquire a broad and solid base in mathematics enabling both further study and application, and we aim to provide an outstanding undergraduate environment of courses and opportunities. We also offer a strong base in computer science and we promote connections among mathematics, computer science, and related disciplines.

Major in Mathematics

The major in mathematics consists of 11 mathematics or computer science courses including:

  • MAT 113; MAT 150
  • Either MAT 140 or MAT 160
  • One of MAT 220, MAT 230, or MAT 255
  • Two of MAT 315, MAT 330, or MAT 355
  • Five electives from mathematics or computer science courses numbered above 200, with at least two of those above 300

Minor in Mathematics

We also offer a minor in mathematics which consists of six courses:

  • MAT 113; MAT 150
  • MAT 140 or MAT 160
  • One of MAT 220, MAT 230, or MAT 255
  • One of MAT 315, MAT 330, or MAT 355
  • One additional mathematics or computer science course numbered above 200

Honors in Mathematics

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department grants honors to graduating students with outstanding records of accomplishment in mathematics, as demonstrated in three areas: breadth of curriculum, quality of academic performance, and significance of scholarly thesis project. Candidates may emphasize either pure or applied mathematics, corresponding to specified course selections.
