The college maintains a physical education requirement for graduation; however, the program carries no academic credit. A total of four courses are required:
The Davidson 101 requirement must be completed in the first semester of the first year at Davidson. You are encouraged, but not required to complete the physical education requirement by the end of their sophomore year.
Two courses are required. When enrolled for credit, you are required to attend 90 percent of the class sessions. Each absence exceeding the allowed number must be made up. While you are encouraged to continue with a subject or activity you enjoy, a class may be taken only one time for credit.
One credit is required. You can fulfill the team sport requirement through varsity athletics, club sports, or intramural participation. Varsity athletes must be listed on the team's official NCAA roster, while club sport and intramural athletes are required to participate in 75 percent of the scheduled games and/or practices.
Effective July 2013, all students who complete four years as a varsity athlete will be awarded two lifetime credits and their team sport credit. Athletes competing for less than four years will receive one lifetime and one team credit.
Varsity athletes are not excluded from completing the Davidson 101 requirement. This change impacts both current and future students. See the director of physical education and recreation for more information.
