This course offers a comparative exploration of Soviet Russian, Weimar German, and Russian exilic modes of artistic and literary representation in/of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Berlin between the wars. Among the topics to be covered are modernist aesthetic ideologies and versions of cityscapes, childhood narratives, and issues of language, gender, ethnicity, and power. We will consider such movements as Futurism, Acmeism, Expressionism, Bauhaus, and Constructivism.
