“Do You Hear The People Sing?”® - Davidson Music Ensembles Join Together for a Night of Opera and Musical Theatre

by Amanda Preston

On April 14, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., the Davidson College Choral Arts Society, Symphony Orchestra, and Opera Workshop will collaborate for the first time in the college's history to present an evening of spectacular music featuring songs from Les Misérables, The Magic Flute, Gilbert & Sullivan, and more!

The performance will feature 17 student vocalists, as well as a live student orchestra and full chorus. From the stage of the Duke Family Performance Hall, the audience will get to hear some of the most popular opera tunes and favorite musical numbers, followed by a very special performance of a newly commissioned arrangement of music from Les Misérables.

Current Director of the Opera Workshop Jacque Culpepper notes "for years, Dr. Keith and I have dreamed about putting our student forces (opera singers and orchestra) together for an operatic collaboration. With the addition of our fantastic and energetic choral director, Dr. Chris Gilliam, the time was right! With over 200 performers onstage, the synergy of doing something bigger than we all could do separately has been totally energizing!  I also know the audience will love the operatic hit tunes even if they have never seen an opera. Tickets are very reasonable so there is no excuse not to come and enjoy this wonderful night."

Individual tickets are $5-15, and the program is free for students with a valid college ID. For tickets, contact the box office at 704-894-2135 or visit them online at www.davidson.edu/tickets. For more information, call 704-894-2848 or visit www.davidson.edu/music.
