Charlotte Observer: "Trash Goalies" Help Fans Minimize Waste in Landfills

Last semester Marcus Carson and student volunteers conducted an audit of all trash collected in a single day on campus.

Davidson's Office of Sustainability and its "trash goalie" student volunteers have worked at two sporting events this year to help fans properly dispose of their refreshment trash. Besides keeping almost half of the game trash out of landfills, the initiatives encouraged people to consciously think about sorting their trash instead of passively throwing it away.

Student trash goalie Stephanie Schauder '15 said she hopes that eventually people will think of the end-life of a product before they make a purchase, and consciously buy things that can be recycled or composted instead of those that will go into the landfill.
