College commencements are a boon for charities in the thrift store business. Multitudes of rooms are being vacated by graduates, and by underclass students taking off for the summer. In many cases, students leave behind whatever they can't carry or can't afford to ship home.
Rather than throwing away gently used furniture and appliances, Davidson and several other Charlotte-area colleges have established means of donating these items to local charities. Davidson's "Ditch and Dash" program has been available to students for several years to benefit Crisis Assistance Free Store, Goodwill and the Salvation Army.
Goodwill says graduation has become the second busiest time of year, followed by the final week of December when people make last minute donations in time for tax deductions.
