For an additional fee of $275 per person, room and board are available to those who wish to stay on campus during the institute. Housing will be in a college residence hall. Participants will be in a single room but will share a bathroom with three other participants. In addition to the meals covered by the tuition, the housing fee includes breakfast Monday through Friday and dinner Monday through Thursday. Provided linens include one set of sheets (two flat sheets) and towels, one pillow and blanket. All rooms are smoke free.
Yes, lunch is provided Monday through Thursday and is included in the tuition fee.
Courses are held in the Chambers Building. All science courses (biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics) are held in various buildings around campus, depending on where the labs are. The exact class location will be emailed in June to each participant.
You should plan to fly into Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Taxi service and rental car services (PDF) are available at the airport. Participants are required to make their own transportation arrangements from the airport. Driving directions will be included in the final confirmation packet e-mailed to each participant in June.
You should receive an initial confirmation email within two weeks of receipt of your registration. If you have not received anything, please call 704-894-2986 to confirm that your registration form has been received. We receive calls each year in June from individuals who have submitted paperwork through their school system that never makes it here, or who have mailed it in and we never receive it. If you don't hear from us, call. Final institute packets, that will include a map, driving directions, classroom locations, what to bring, what to wear, etc., will be emailed after June 1.
Classes are filled on a first-received (payment check or credit card) basis. We are required to strictly limit the number of registrants for classes. If the registration deadline has not passed, you are welcome to contact the AP director to see if there is still space available. Any workshop that becomes full will be posted on our website.
If there are specific items you need to bring for your subject, the participant letter from your instructor that you will receive in your confirmation email will tell you. Otherwise, bring something to write with, something to write on, something to carry all the books you will get, your school calendar, any text book that you have questions about or would like to share, any lessons or activities that you want to share. If you have a laptop, you are encouraged to bring it. Also, since you will be sitting all day (for the most part), you may want to bring a cushion to provide some padding to the chairs.
Davidson in June is hot and humid. The buildings will be hot or cold (we don't control the temperature). We encourage you to bring a light sweater in case the classroom gets cool. Dress so that you will be comfortable sitting for much of the day, often in those little chairs with arm desks, and walking outside in the heat. Dress to be comfortable.
Please keep in mind that the Davidson College is a residential campus. What does that mean for you? It means that you might not be able to park near the building that your class is in. You should be prepared to walk to get to your building, to get to lunch, etc. You will receive a number of textbooks to take back with you. Some subjects will receive more than others, but typically everyone will receive at least two different titles. Keep this in mind when packing, or be prepared to ship them back.
Call 704-894-2986 or email Suzanne Grzeszczak at email@example.com if you have any additional questions.
