The Fundación Haciendas Mudo Maya is located in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and generates regional developments in the region. FHMM is sponsoring up to six fellows to work in three distinct positions: Socio-Economic Development, Public Policy, and Environmental Conservation. Fluency in Spanish is required.
FHMM will provide a paid salary plus free housing for all of the fellows involved. The current plan is to hire four fellows spread among three different positions. Where possible, the recipients will work in pairs under the supervision of the FHMM staff or an affiliate group.
The fellow will provide knowledge and leadership for all activities related to developing an environmental management plan for Reserva Yaxché in the state of Campeche, Mexico. This position reports directly to a FHMM staff member and includes housing near Merida, Mexico.
Potential Areas of focus include: developing an environmental management plan for Reserva Yaxché, executing GIS mapping of land tenure issues, identifying core areas for land conservation and other tracks for multi-use, coordinating community participation in the environmental conservation plan, and facilitating and identifying the major areas of work between the protected areas and the community.
Basic Qualifications: Knowledge of community-based conservation methodology, skills for guiding/leading community members in a participative way, knowledge of human development and skill in managing a multi-disciplinary team, driving ability, and Spanish fluency and knowledge of Maya is desirable.
The fellow will provide knowledge to the Human Development Team at FHMM. S/he would work along with colleges in strengthening the area by providing meaningful insights and analysis about the rural communities in which FHMM works: Ejidos legal framework, their regional context and how they impact the families in their communities and their livelihood.
Potential areas of focus could include: Working as a special assistant to the leaders of the organization to better understand their roles in coordinating the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the FHMM programs; developing specific training materials for community facilitators, local leaders, and groups in the area of conservation and environmental management; documenting and sharing best practices among facilitators, local leaders, community members and volunteers; and assisting in other ways on FHMM projects around economic and tax regulations.
Basic Qualifications: Knowledge of Mexican policies, dynamics and law; ability to create knowledge toolkits for small to medium size teams; ability to communicate with people at different levels of understanding; knowledge of human development methods and rural communities; leadership skills; and driving. Candidates must also have demonstrated flexibility to changing situations and priorities, supervisory experience, and success in managing projects in the past.
Details on this experience are still being developed. The fellow(s) would partner with 27 partner organizations to establish 20 percent of the sea as a "no fish" zone by 2015. The fellow(s) would need to build rapport with local fishermen to promote regeneration of fish species and develop a lobster certification program. The fellow(s) would also try to promote conservation of sea turtles and provide direct support to fish bank projects through applied environmental research projects as needed.
