After Hours / Emergency Services

A registered nurse is on-duty at the Student Health Center weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and remains on-call after-hours, including overnight on weeknights and around-the-clock on weekends. A counselor also remains on-call after hours. For severe cases and services outside the scope of those offered at the Student Health Center, there are multiple hospitals and urgent care facilities nearby.

AFTER HOURS - REGISTERED NURSE

A registered nurse remains accessible to students by pager between 9:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, or at any time during the weekend. The nurse will assess a student's need for face-to-face evaluation, regular sick call assessment, or referral to a local emergency room or urgent care facility.
To page the registered nurse on-call:

  • Call 704-337-7047. You will hear a recorded message asking for an alphanumeric message.
  • At the beep, use the keypad on your phone to carefully enter the phone number the nurse should call to reach you. You will hear another series of beeps and then may hang up.
  • Be sure to leave the line open to receive the return call.
  • If you do not receive a return call within 10 minutes, there may have been a problem with your callback number. Call the pager again and re-enter it
  • The pager is active only when the Student Health Center is closed. If you need to speak with someone during regular hours, call the main number, 704-894-2300.
  • A nurse remains on-call during all breaks except for winter and summer break. In the summer, on-call services resume at 5 p.m. the Wednesday before freshman orientation, and during winter break, services resume at 7:30 a.m. the Saturday before classes begin in January.

Urgent Health Needs After-Hours

If you have an obvious broken bone or laceration that needs stitches, you will be referred to a local urgent care facility or hospital. The nurse on-call can evaluate other injuries and provide crutches, ice packs, ace bandages, and other symptomatic treatments until you can see a Student Health Center physician.

If you are in severe distress, such as an acute asthma attack or allergic reaction with breathing difficulty, you must be evaluated at a hospital and likely transported via medic. You should not wait for the on-call nurse, as such situations escalate quickly. Instead, call 911 or go to an emergency facility (see the list below).

AFTER HOURS - COUNSELOR

If you experience a psychological emergency during counseling center office hours (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday) a staff member at the center will see you that same day. If you experience a crisis after 5 p.m. on a weekday or over the weekend, a counselor on-call will be available for consultation over the phone or face-to-face. Counselors also remain on-call during school breaks, with the exception of winter break and summer break.

To reach the counselor on-call:

Call 704-894-2451.

Any member of the college community, including family members of students, can call the counselor to address a student psychological emergency. Calls are fully confidential, as with all counseling services, with exception made only in the case of imminent harm or as required by law.
