• Freshman Cake Race, A Davidson Tradition

Established in 1930, the Cake Race is a voluntary 1.3-mile dash around campus for first-year students. The Davidson community donates cakes to distribute to top finishers, who select a cake prize based on the order of finish. The Cake Race is one of many activities during Wildcat Welcome Week.

Student Activities Programs

The Student Activities Office supports, sponsors, and organizes several events throughout the year for the students to participate in and enjoy. Some of these events include Wildcat Welcome Week, Quiz Bowl, After Midnight, the Activities Fair, exam study breaks, and more.

Wildcat Welcome Week

Wildcat Welcome Week welcomes all students back to campus during the first week of classes each fall with a variety of activities and information sessions from major student organizations and departments. The goal of Wildcat Welcome Week is to provide new students with additional programming and informational opportunities beyond their formal new student orientation experience as they make Davidson their home and begin classes. The week also provides a unified effort to welcome back returning students into the Davidson community after their summer away. An initiative of Residence Life and the College Union, the Wildcat Welcome Week is a mix of Davidson traditions, such as the Freshman Cake Race and Live Thursday, with new activities sure to engage all students. Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl has a distinguished history at Davidson dating back to 1969 with many teams winning national and regional championships. The key to our success is a strong intramural tournament organized each year by the College Union and the Residence Life Office. In a typical year, between 100 and 150 students play in the campus tournament, competing for fun and a chance to represent Davidson on our varsity team. The campus tournament is open to every Davidson student. Teams represent fraternities, student organizations, residence halls, and groups of friends. Selection to the Davidson varsity squad is determined by quickness of mind, breadth of knowledge, and sportsmanship, as displayed in the tournament. Sign ups for Quiz Bowl are mid-fall semester.

After Midnight

After Midnight is a late-night programming initiative that provides students with a monthly event that includes free great food and entertainment in the Alvarez College Union Atrium. Students have a chance to eat, socialize, listen to music, and win great prizes. The events run one Saturday night per month during the school year from midnight-2:30 a.m. and are planned by the Program Advisor of the College Union and staffed by the Union Board. If you have any ideas for upcoming After Midnight dates, please contact Michelle Navas.
