Senate

The Senate contributes to the welfare of the student body by providing representation to the Student Government Association.

The Senate meets once a week during the academic year at a time and place determined by its members. Senate meetings are normally open to the student body and others in the college community.

Composition

  • The president and vice president of the student body, the chancellor of the Senate (non-voting member), the treasurer of the Senate (non-voting member), and the director of public relations of the Senate (non-voting member).
  • Three democratically elected sophomore, junior, and senior class senators, and six freshman senators.
  • Four senators elected by and from the body of independent students, four Diversity Coordinating Board senators, one Black Student Union senator, one Davidson International Association senator, and one senator from each Patterson Court Council organization.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of college policy
  • Charter student organizations within policies established by the board of trustees
  • Disburse funds from the SGA treasury and delegate authority for the allocation of funds available to student organizations
  • Provide and assist in the supervising of student activities
  • Serve as an appeals mechanism to the interpretation of SGA Bylaws
  • Advise and assist the SGA President in this or her representation of the student body to the faculty, administration, and trustees
  • Appoint student members to faculty committees and advisory councils
