Jazz is where it's at! Learn about jazz improv with top area jazz musicians, join N.Y.-based jazz pianist Jerry Korman alongside his daughter, violinist and vocalist Arielle Korman '17 and kick-back with late-night Jazz Ensemble Live Thursdays. The season will culminate with a guest artist performance in late January featuring jazz drummer and alum Usman Salahuddin '06 and an incredible April residency with international jazz clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen.

Performances are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

This special event gives an inside look at playing jazz. Davidson's jazz piano instructor Lovell Bradford will collaborate with top area jazz musicians to perform and provide a peek behind-the-scenes at how jazz combos improv and collaborate.

USMAN SALAHUDDIN '06

Usman Salahuddin '06 returns to his alma mater as a featured soloist with the full Jazz Ensemble. After a short career in management consulting, Usman moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to study with renowned jazz drummer John Von Ohlen. It was here Usman cut his teeth as a jazz drummer and began to refine his musicianship. After three years of music school in Cincinnati, Usman returned home to North Carolina. In 2014, the U.S. Embassy awarded Usman a Fulbright Arts Grant to perform with New York jazz singer Emily Braden at Jazz-A-Ouaga, an international jazz festival in Burkina Faso, Africa. Usman is thrilled to return to Davidson and perform alongside our student musicians.

The clarinet, once the king of popular, classical and folk music, has been forgotten. In recent years, Israeli clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen has been "bringing the clarinet to the world" ("Fresh Air") and making it relevant in today's musical landscape. Universally critically acclaimed, Anat has been labeled a "master" by the New York Times, and voted best clarinet player by Downbeat and JazzTimes. Anat will be joined by the full Jazz Ensemble for this performance.
