Beth Thompson '96 was named Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' 2016 principal of the year last week, and CMS Superintendent Ann Clark '80 presented her with the award at Whitewater Middle School in West Charlotte.
The alumna's history spans more than two decades–while a student at Davidson, Thompson did her student teaching at Alexander Graham Middle School, where Clark was principal at the time.
A classics major at Davidson, Thompson taught Latin, archaeology, Spanish and chorus before becoming a principal in 2010, first at Whitewater Academy elementary school and then at Whitewater Middle starting in 2014. Over the last two years, Thompson has focused on mending relationships and improving student performance, driven by her desire to alleviate poverty and foster reconciliation.
"She has never hit a hill that she isn't willing to climb," Clark said of Thompson in the Charlotte Observer article.
Upon receiving the award, Thompson gave credit to the teachers, parents and students in the room, saying she is only standing up for the work they are already doing.
