Charlotte Observer: Ethics Prof. Considers Report on Torture

Prof. David Perry, Director of the Vann Center for EthicsProfessor David Perry, Director of the Vann Center for Ethics and author of the book Partly Cloudy: Ethics in War, Espionage, Covert Action, and Interrogation, considers questions raised by the recently released U.S. Senate report on CIA interrogation. He notes that torture tends to coax false confessions and misleading information. But he also is not persuaded that it’s absolutely immoral to use torture to elicit information from terrorists who show contempt for basic human rights. He concludes that, in the end, adherence to Constitutional law provides the surest guide for those who deal with captured American enemies.
