New York Times: ‘Slow’ Gaming and the Pokémon Go Phenomenon

Mark SampleMillions of users of the mobile game app Pokémon Go continue to flood public spaces worldwide in the quest to “catch ’em all.” Pokémon Go and other slowly paced game apps, are exploding in popularity, combining brief moments of action with the ability to multi-task and decompress while playing.

In a piece from The New York Times, Davidson Professor of Digital Studies Mark Sample offers his insight on why these more low-key gaming experiences are growing so popular. According to Sample, so-called ‘slow games’ “fit into the interstices of our lives,” and deviate from typical gaming experiences that require unabated concentration.
