USA Today: Alumnus Matt Stirn Leads Wind River Project to Prehistoric Find

Matt Stirn
Matt Stirn worked on the Wind River project in the summer of 2010 while a student at Davidson.

As a classics major with a concentration in archeology, Matt Stirn '11 developed a model to predict the whereabouts of prehistoric lodge sites in Wyoming's Wind River Range. Now, as field director for the Wind River Archeological Project, Stirn leads the team of archeologists that recently discovered 13 sky-high prehistoric villages-including one that may be the oldest mountain settlement in North America. These discoveries have radically redefined the ways in which archeologists now look at how prehistoric people lived in alpine and sub alpine zones.
