Internships, Careers and Graduate School

We are committed to advising students in identifying and choosing successful internship, graduate school, and career opportunities.

In addition to our faculty members, who serve as excellent resources, networking connections, and advisers, the Betty and B. Frank Matthews II ’49 Center for Career Development (Matthews Center) also provides a large number of online and in-person services to assist students in finding internships, career opportunities, and graduate programs.

Practica and Internships

Practica and internships provide students opportunities to explore their interests in meaningful ways with real-word applications. For example, students recently participated in our practicum with Autism Charlotte, a local nonprofit that works with families dealing with autism. This is just one example of the many diverse opportunities available to our students, who participate in internships during the academic year and/or over the summer, domestically and/or abroad.

Another example, and a hallmark of the Psychology program at Davidson, is our undergraduate, 8-week clinical program at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, N.C.

The department also offers courses in the form of internships, such as PSY291: Practicum in IO Psychology taught in collaboration with our faculty and the Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

We regularly post information about new and existing internship opportunities in our weekly e-newsletter, Psych Snippets, and students also may access the college's internship database (login required) and strong alumni network to learn about additional opportunities. Graduate School

Psychology prepares students for graduate-level study through rigorous coursework, high-level research and publication opportunities, and individual advising/guidance as they make plans for continued study. Our students leave Davidson with the skills and experience they need for success in graduate school and beyond.

Psychology alumni have attended many of the nation's top graduate programs. They have earned master's and doctoral degrees in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, public administration, education, social work, law, business, and more.

Careers

Our graduates' interests are diverse and multi-faceted, and they pursue careers in a wide range of industries in public and private sectors. We focus on preparing students to think critically, communicate effectively in oral and written form, and apply quantitative analytics in whatever professional roles they find themselves. Recent graduates have worked as behavioral therapists, clinical and cognitive psychologists, physicians, surgeons, and other medical professionals, consultants in industry and human resources professionals, professors of psychology and neuroscience, and health science policy analysts.
