The Theatre Department produces four shows each academic year as part of the main season, including one mainstage and one second stage production per semester, offering all interested students the chance to get involved in a variety of backstage and acting opportunities.

Social Justice Theatre Troupe

The Social Justice Theatre Troupe is one of the primary projects for the Theatre Department’s season. Through improvisation, storytelling, theatre games and exercises, the troupe will explore social justice issues identified by the group. This year, the troupe will work with one of the leading social justice-focused theatre companies in the United States, Fringe Benefits, based in Los Angeles. The company's artistic director will join our community for a series of workshops and mentor the development of student work. In the spring, the troupe will present a cabaret-style performance for those interested in participating.

"Open to All Students -- Just Show Up!"

A great way to get involved with the theatre department without a major time commitment, the troupe meets every Tuesday in the fall for rehearsal and no theatre experience is necessary. So as to help our team understand a tentative headcount, please sign up if you have an interest in joining. Even if you're unable to make the first meeting on September 6, come join in the fun on any Tuesday this fall!

Workshops, Guests, and Impromptu Events

Many regional theatre artists visit with students throughout the year to give constructive feedback on their work or lead them in workshops. These visits often are announced a few weeks in advance to allow time to prepare. The department also organizes trips to visit and engage with local theatre groups.

Work Study

In addition to volunteer opportunities, the department opens several work-study positions each year for students looking to gain paid work experience. All scenic elements in our productions are built in-house by our work study students, and positions also are available in our administrative office, where students interested in the foundations of arts management get experience in data analysis and publicity work.
