Math Coffee - William Banks, University of Missouri

Speaker: William Banks, University of Missouri
Title: "A (very) Brief Introduction to Number Theory and Cryptography"

Abstract: Cryptography is the study and practice of mathematical techniques related to various aspects of information security, including:

  • Confidentiality – keeping information away for all but those authorized to have it;
  • Data Integrity – ensuring that information has not been altered by unauthorized or unknown means;
  • Authentication – corroborating the identity of an entity (for example, a person, a computer, or a credit card) or verifying the source of information.

My talk will explore fundamental concepts from Number Theory and show how these ideas are applied to Cryptography.
