Public lecture: Dr. Johann Van Niekerk presents "Queerness and Gender in Afrofuturism's Hybrid Dimensions"
On behalf of the Gender and Sexuality Studies department and with support from the Charles N. Williamson fund, we welcome Dr. Johann Van Niekerk, an associate professor of music at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky to Davidson College. His visit includes engaging with several classes and presenting a lecture: "Queerness and Gender in Afrofuturism's Hybrid Dimensions."
In this talk, Dr. Van Niekerk will investigate Afrofuturist creative endeavors and the ways in which they deviate from or reinforce mainstream and/or patriarchal “Western” values, including the works of Beyoncé, Jake Blount, Robert Jones Jr., Janelle Monae, Nnedi Okorafor, Athi-Patra Ruga, Pamela Patsimo Sunstrum, Lil Nas X, and other contemporaries from the African continent, the United States, and the African diaspora.
