Public Lecture: Sophia E. Kroft presents "Points of Exchange: Encountering Ancient Egypt in the 19th Century"
Please join the Davidson College Art and History Departments this afternoon to hear Dr. Kroft talk about Napoleon Bonaparte's encounter with ancient Egypt, heralding the beginning of Egyptology as an academic discipline.
Sophia holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts in Ancient Egyptian Art and Archaeology for which she specialized in Predynastic Egyptian visual culture. Her minor fields include the history of Egyptology and 19th – early 20th century French culture. She focuses on object-based analyses to conduct her research and designs experimental archaeology strategies to approach the prehistoric material. While living in New York, she held the Vilcek Curatorial Fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as positions teaching a range of art history topics.
