Anthony Foxx '93 Nominated for Cabinet Post

President Barack Obama nominated Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx '93 to be his next transportation secretary.

"The Davidson community celebrates Anthony's nomination to serve the American people in Washington. Anthony's dynamic, warm, courageous leadership in the Charlotte region was and is inspiring, and I am thrilled that he may have the opportunity to continue to lead and serve at the national level," said Davidson College President Carol E. Quillen. "I and many of us at Davidson are lucky and grateful to count him as a friend."

Foxx joined Obama and outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in the White House's East Room for the announcement. Obama touted Foxx's leadership of Charlotte, citing the city's growing economy and significant investments in transportation, including air and light rail infrastructure.

Foxx was first elected to the Charlotte City Council in 2005, and was elected mayor in November 2009. He served as chair of the steering and host committees for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Raised in Charlotte's Lincoln Heights neighborhood, Foxx earned a bachelor's degree in history at Davidson College and was the first African American elected as student body president. He earned his law degree from New York University and has served in all three branches of federal government-as a judicial clerk for the U.S. Circuit Court for the Sixth Circuit, trial attorney for the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and counsel for the House Judiciary Committee.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation will hold the confirmation hearings on a date as yet to be determined.
