MacDonald Community Scholars Program Receives Funding Boost

Scott MacDonald of Del Mar, Calif., who established the MacDonald Community Scholars program at Davidson College, has made a commitment to expand funding of the current scholars program. MacDonald is funding a seventh MacDonald Scholarship this year with a commitment to fund an eighth scholar in 2015.

"We are grateful for the funding of additional MacDonald Community Scholars," said Stacey Riemer, associate dean of students and director of civic engagement at Davidson College. "The MacDonald Community Scholars have been active at Davidson since 2005 and have accomplished remarkable things, including building and operating an elementary school in rural Ethiopia, providing solar lighting for children in rural villages in India and providing funding for cancer research through selling Hives for Lives honey at local grocery stores. MacDonald Community Scholars are making a difference around the world."

"I am delighted to continue my support of Davidson's program of civic engagement, and to make it possible for Davidson students willing to give back to society to help others in need," said MacDonald. "This program should serve as an inspiration to other colleges and universities and prospective donors."

Scott MacDonald is a former Davidson parent. Son Andrew graduated in 2003 and son Ross graduated in 2008.

The MacDonald Scholarship program provides support to students who make a significant commitment to community service. MacDonald Community Scholars are selected each year from the selective Bonner Scholarship pool. Scholars take part in 280 hours of direct service, leadership training and enrichment activities each academic year for four years along with Bonner Scholars.
