Davidson College’s Phi Beta Kappa Chapter Lauded for Excellence

September 27, 2024

The Davidson College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa received an Outstanding Chapter Award for excellence in representing the ideals and commitments of PBK in the 2021-2024 triennium.

Davidson’s chapter was among a select group honored during the society’s national meeting, which is held every three years. Professor Emeritus Richard Neidinger, secretary treasurer of the chapter, accepted the award on behalf of the chapter.

Davidson was lauded for its historical excellence as a liberal arts institution; efforts to increase diversity and access to liberal arts and sciences; and coverage of student fees through a new endowment and financial support from the administration — beginning with the class of 2021, Davidson began paying life-time membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society, including all local expenses, for student inductees. Contributions to the Davidson Phi Beta Kappa Endowment ensure this is possible for future classes. In addition, the chapter enjoys full support of the administration in areas ranging from the registrar’s office, academic affairs, college communications and college relations.

The Davidson College chapter celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2023. Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 and will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026.
