"Davidson has allowed me to learn, unlearn, succeed, and fail — all of which have helped me grow as a learner, a leader, a member of my community, and a friend. At Davidson, professors go beyond teaching; they mentor with a deep belief in each student’s potential. It’s because of the people who call Davidson home that I’ve been able to try new things and grow into myself, all with the confidence that I’m surrounded by those who are unconditionally rooting for me."

Dear Nummit,

As I begin to wrap up my four years at Davidson, this feels like a long-overdue message of my adoration for you!

Thank you for your beverages. From my iced hibiscus berry tea in the heat of a North Carolina August, to a piping hot mocha with whipped cream to make studying for finals feel cozy and encouraging, many of my Davidson memories feature a Nummit drink in one (and sometimes both) of my hands. Nothing gets me more excited than awaiting the seasonal menu features, and few things can get me going for an early morning class like a large coffee and a pastry. My study sessions would be impossible without you.

Thank you for your events. Weekly trivia hosted by Union Board sparks competition amongst teams, and while we may all be friends at the end of the day, I’ve made some temporary enemies in rounds about college basketball, musical history or presidential pets. Friday afternoon concerts on your porch are the best way to end a week, and seeing professors join students to listen to a local band is something I never expected from my college experience. Thank you for creating space for community nights on Tuesdays and encouraging student organizations to bring people together — I have met new people and learned about corners of campus that I otherwise would still not be familiar with.

Thank you for giving me a cozy place to do my work. When it’s too nice outside to be in the library, or I know I’ll want regular study breaks, your coffee shop environment is the best place to knock out an assignment or make some significant progress on a paper. Having a freshly-baked pastry next to my computer as I apply to jobs certainly helps in the process! There’s also nothing better than struggling on an assignment and seeing someone from class at the table next to you — I’ve collaborated and ideated here in ways provided by no other spaces.

Thank you for your porch. Gathering with my friends around a light blue picnic table is one of the most poignant memories throughout my time at Davidson, and I hope to one day have a table of the same color in my own backyard. On these tables I have learned new card games, cried about growing up, spilt watercolors all over myself and laughed about it for days, and won some intense rounds of Bananagrams. I have danced on your porch to a student DJ, swung on a hammock for hours while the sun set, made quite the scene over an encroaching bumble bee, and continued building friendships that will last a lifetime.

Thank you for your people. Starting my day with warm welcomes from student baristas and managers is something that I have taken for granted, and whenever I am off campus, I miss the familiarity of someone knowing my order the second I walk in. Thank you for smiles from people I don’t know and hugs from those I do, and for a room full of cheering when I submitted the biggest assignment of my life. I have made new friends, caught up with old ones, and seen everyone under the sun within your walls, and that, to me, is the epitome of Davidson.

Thank you for embodying our campus culture through warmth, kindness, openness and community. You mean the world to me!
