Background

My teaching interests are intertwined with my research. Broadly described, I study:

  • how social contexts (e.g., inequality) shape the health of underserved populations (e.g., people with disabilities, racial-ethnic minorities) and
  • the social construction of health, illness, and disability in the U.S. and abroad.

Given my specialization in health disparities, I am currently involved in research projects that explore the topic of health in different settings. In one of these ongoing projects, I am developing the findings of my dissertation which examined the embodied experiences of adults who acquired physical disabilities from the earthquake of 2010 in Haiti. Moving forward, I will expand my geographical focus to other regions in the Global South.
