Davidson College Plans for In-Person Learning This Fall
April 9, 2021
We plan to be fully in-person in the fall – working, teaching and learning.
Davidson’s strength lies in its community, the supportive relationships among friends and with mentors who share students’ hopes and dreams. Those connections fuel the Davidson experience we all treasure, and they grow out of both the organized and serendipitous interactions possible here. We know that being on campus and in-person remain essential to that magical environment.
Students taking classes should plan to be in residence in the fall. We recognize that circumstances could change between now and August, but our expectation is that all students will be in residence. Students may not elect to be remote for the fall semester. The college will contact and work with international students if COVID-19 travel restrictions impact students’ fall travel plans.
We expect nearly all classes will be taught in person. We understand that the current course catalogue still lists remote and hybrid courses. Those listings have been changing, and the percentage of courses with at least some in-person component have been increasing, rapidly. Those numbers will continue to rise as COVID vaccines are rolled out and faculty are, then, positioned to ensure in-person instruction.
Our students have demonstrated great interest in getting a COVID vaccine, in keeping with Davidson’s strong community culture, so we see no need at this point to require vaccination. We have worked with our partners in the spring to make vaccines accessible, including organizing two vaccine clinics. We will make any adjustments needed if the context around us shifts.
