Support for Lactation Policy
Davidson College is committed to maintaining a family-friendly workplace and supporting the health and well-being of all employees. In keeping with that commitment, the college will accommodate nursing employees who wish to express breast milk during their workday.
Any employee who is breastfeeding their child will be provided reasonable break times to express breast milk. Nursing employees should arrange with their supervisors appropriate and reasonable break times or flexible scheduling for expressing milk. Supervisors are responsible for providing reasonable break times each day for employees wishing to express breast milk. When possible, breaks should be scheduled during normal break and mealtimes and/or when work schedule allows. If a non-exempt employee requires time beyond any regular paid break time, the additional break will be unpaid.
The college maintains a dedicated Lactation Room in the Wall Building Room 190A, which may be reserved. If that space is not convenient and the nursing employee does not have a private office that works for this purpose, the college and the employee’s supervisor will, upon request, provide a nursing employee a clean, private lactation space that is shielded from view and free from intrusion of co-workers and others. (Toilet stalls do not fit the definition of a suitable space under this policy.)
To coordinate access to a lactation room, please email Rene Baker at rebaker@davidson.edu or call her at x-2444.
Davidson College prohibits discrimination against or harassment of breastfeeding employees who exercise their rights under this policy.
